Quince años después de haber grabado las Sonatas para viola da gamba y clave de Bach por primera vez (Harmonia Mundi, junto a Rinaldo Alessandrini), Paolo Pandolfo vuelve a este repertorio con un planteamiento completamente renovado, fruto de intensos años de reflexión, estudio e investigación de las posibilidades de su instrumento. En palabras de Pandolfo, la interpretación de estas obras, debido a la naturaleza tan diferente de los dos instrumentos, se convierte muy a menudo en una «disputa musical», en vez de lo que la grandeza de esta música demanda, que es una «conversación musical» en la que la partitura adquiera «transparencia y elocuencia».
La complicidad requerida para este ejercicio de comunicación interpretativa la ha encontrado Pandolfo en la figura del clavecinista Markus Hünninger, amigo desde hace muchos años y docente como él en la Schola Cantorum de Basilea. El resultado es un disco muy personal, en la línea de calidad sin compromisos de todo lo que produce el violagambista romano, que tras sus fundamentales registros dedicados a Forqueray, Hume, Marais, Sainte Colombe y Abel completa ahora en Glossa su particular visión de Bach, iniciada en 2000 con la grabación de las ya legendarias Seis suites.
El disco se completa con dos arias con viola da gamba obbligata extraídas de dos Pasiones de Bach, para las que Pandolfo ha contado con las intervenciones de dos de los grandes cantantes de música antigua de las últimas décadas, el contratenor Michael Chance y el bajo Harry van der Kamp.
It seemed that the music of Carl Friedrich Abel was proving singularly impervious to modern performance initiatives. More is known about the life and times of this Köthen-born composer than about his actual music (he can be placed as a pupil of JS Bach and as someone who died in the year of the 17 year-old Beethoven’s first visit to Vienna). Yet it was as a virtuosic improviser on the by then (surely?) outdated instrument of the viola da gamba that Abel was equally known for by his contemporaries. So, the most suitable candidate in the 21st century for bringing back Abel’s music to its rightful place needs to be not only a supreme interpreter on the viola da gamba and steeped in its repertory but one capable of understanding the almost lost art of improvisation. Widely admired as a virtuoso exponent of the viola da gamba through his concert performances and recordings of key composers from Germany, France, Spain, England and his native Italy, Paolo Pandolfo has in recent years been concentrating on his instincts and skills for improvising and composing (not to mention continuing with his teaching).
